Emsworth British Food Fortnight
One of the reasons why last year’s Emsworth British Food Fortnight was so successful and won a prestigious national award was the way that the event reached out to many parts of the community, which included the support of the Beacon Food Bank. Each day during the fortnight, there were a number of food donation points throughout the village, including outside The Southern Co-operative store and the Pastoral Centre in St. Peter’s Square. The food collected was then used to build a Food Mountain as part of the Inter-denominational open air Harvest Festival Service and donated to the Beacon Food Bank. As a direct result of this we are delighted that The Southern Co-operative has decided to position a permanent food bank donation point in store and continue to allow Emsworth residents to support this worthwhile local support group.
This year’s Emsworth British Food Fortnight will once again see the event partnering the Beacon Food Bank. As well as the now permanent point at The Southern Co-operative, three additional Food Bank Collection points will be in place at the Pastoral Centre, the Baptist Church and also for the first time The Southern Co-operative Westbourne. This year’s open air inter-denominational Harvest Festival will take place in St.Peter’s Square on Sunday 4th October at 11.30am and as well as celebrating the harvest it will see the culmination of this year’s event and the donating of Emsworth’s Food Mountain.
"Following the legacy of last year's British Food Fortnight, when our customers donated so much towards the food mountain for Beacon Food Bank, we were very keen to continue our help; it is important to our business, as a co-operative, that we support our local communities. We introduced a monthly collection point in store to coincide with the Hampshire Farmers' Market here in Emsworth and thanks to the continuing generosity of our customers, this has grown so much that we've now
installed a permanent food bank donation point here in our store, which is filling up nicely. We'll also be adding a food collection trolley for Beacon Food Bank in our Westbourne store for the duration of this year's British Food Fortnight. This complements The Southern Co-operative’s wider provision of funding support for food banks and food donation points in our stores across the south, including Chichester, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight." Garry Farne, Retail Business Manager at The Southern Co-operative Emsworth
"We were overwhelmed with the generosity of the Emsworth community during the last Emsworth Food Fortnight. The Methodist Church collects permanently for us anyway but now, due to public requests, The Southern Co-operative is also positioning a permanent donation point in store. This demonstrates the level of support in Emsworth and is a direct result of our involvement in the Emsworth Food Fortnight." Ruth Scott, Beacon Food Bank
