An inspired initiative by the Emsworth community is celebrating the coastal town’s heritage while helping to sustain the local fishing industry of today.
Local businesses and residents are showing their support for the town’s fishermen by creating the Emsworth Lobster Pot Christmas Tree, buying lobster pots through the Emsworth Business Association for £35 each to build a unique tree on Emsworth Quay.
This will be unveiled during the Emsworth Christmas Lights evening on Friday 27th November and will stand on the quay throughout December.
When the tree is taken down after Christmas, the pots will be donated to Emsworth fishermen to help support and sustain the fishing industry. The first lobster caught in each pot will be given to the business or individual who donated the pot, complete with instructions on how to cook and prepare it.
Alistair Gibson, from the Emsworth Business Association, explained: “It’s not been without its challenges, building a lobster pot Christmas trees is not something we thought we’d ever do, but it’s really caught people’s imagination and once again shows Emsworth coming together to both support the local community - in this case the fishing community - and also to celebrate together.”
