Young engineers rise to the challenge
A Royal Navy visitor helped inspire young students to rise to the challenge and show their engineering skills.
Lieutenant Kieran Lewis, an Engineering Principles Instructor at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, recently spent the day at Cowplain Community College, helping to organise the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Faraday Challenge.
This national competition challenges Year 7 students (11 year olds) to use the BBC Micro: Bit to come up with two prototypes to improve the quality of life in one of four industrial areas: sport, health, transport and lifestyle.
As a STEM Ambassador, Kieran acted as an engineering consultant to help the teams in developing a solid project, assisting in their development of an end product.
Kieran said: “I was able to show the skills expected of an engineer by utilising coaching methods to help the kids work around their project.”
