Windsurfer Awarded To Promising Young Emsworth Sailor
Tommy Millard from Emsworth, who was amongst a handful of promising young sailors from across the UK, has been awarded his very own windsurfer or dinghy thanks to the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST), the official charity partner of the RYA OnBoard programme.
Tommy was selected from hundreds of applications after competing in the RYA Zone and Home Country Championships which took place at eight venues across the UK last September.
Tommy, aged 13, was awarded a BIC Techno board. He started sailing at Emsworth Sailing Club when he was 7-years-old, and fell in love with windsurfing last year when he joined the Portsmouth T15 Club at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre at Portsmouth.
He goes windsurfing as often as he can, twice a week in the summer.
He won his first T15 competition in the 5.8 class and went on to win the RYA’s East and South East Zone Championships. He said: “I love the exhilaration of windsurfing and the challenge of learning more advanced techniques. Having the BIC Techno now means I can move up to a bigger sail.”
He adds “In two years’ time I would like to be in the junior squad for the BIC Techno 6.8 competing for podium places at national events.”
