Remember Remember the 5th of November

November 5. Fireworks night. Guy Fawkes’ Night. Call it what you will, this annual celebration has been marked in Britain for more than 400 years.

The aforementioned Fawkes would surely have preferred to have been immortalised for his success rather than failure, but his – and his fellow plotters, for he was not alone in the endeavour – unsuccessful 1605 attempt to blow up the House of Lords, has been ‘celebrated’ ever since.

It’s fair to say the course of history would have taken a much different route had he not been discovered guarding gunpowder intended to assassinate the then king, James I.

To celebrate the monarch’s survival, bonfires were lit across London – and presumably everybody ate jacket potatoes and bought inflatable toys too – and the tradition has been maintained to this day, normally with  the addition of gunpowder in firework form. Fawkes’ effigy often sits atop the bonfire, or, famously, in such as the Lewes bonfire, an effigy of somebody in the news that year.

The day no longer has any political or religious meaning but it has become one of the most popular of the folk events and big organised events are held right across the country. For safety reasons, we at The Directory Group would suggest attending an organised event rather than hosting your own. And you may find the following list of some of the gatherings in our area useful.
