Meet the 5 alpacas on Hayling Island

Wendy often passed a herd of Alpacas when visiting her daughter, who lives near the New Forest and admired what tremendous animals they were. Back in November 2019 and coming closer to retirement, Wendy decided to invest her savings in something more unusual – five Alpacas!

Wendy’s five Alpacas, named Franklin, Harlequin, Gulliver, Hudson and Kookie are all male and range from 2-4 years old. They roam in her field opposite her house which she shares with her sister Anne. The field sits along West Lane heading towards West Town, turning left a few houses before Brights Lane.

Friends Vanessa and Paul have taken the five four-legged friends under their wings too. Vanessa, who is an experienced horse keeper recently attended a three-day course in Worcester to learn about Alpacas and how to care for them, including what to feed them, how to shear their soft coats, clip their nails and what vitamins they need to help them through a cold winter. To fund the food for their bellies, Wendy sells the Alpaca droppings as ready-to-use fertiliser for £2 a bag, which can be collected from the field.

Before Covid, Wendy had plans to offer the farm as a fun day out, offering Meet the Alpaca days, Alpaca walks along the shore and Alpaca Tea Parties in the newly built wood lodges in the field – which will also sell Alpaca souvenirs!

These playful animals have a lot of love and happiness to share, even the local nursery comes to visit and feed them their favourite Pony Nuts! Wendy hopes that she can begin her Alpaca fun soon, but for now, invites you to pop by and admire these beautiful animals and their cheeky nature which really does bring a smile to anyone’s face.
