Hayling is flagged up for a prestigious award

Once again, the seafront of Hayling Island has been awarded Blue Flag status by Keep Britain Tidy,

The area, known locally as Central Beachlands, retained the prestigious Blue Flag, for another year.

Recognised internationally, the Blue Flag award status acts as an assurance to tourists  the beach they are visiting is one of the best in the world. It is awarded to coastal destinations which have achieved the highest quality in facilities, safety, environmental education and management, as well as having a high standard of water quality.

Councillor Gary Hughes, Deputy Leader of Havant Borough Council and Cabinet Lead for Planning, Hayling Seafront Strategy and Commercial Services, said: "This is another accolade for the beautiful beach that is such a fantastic asset for our borough. Hundreds of thousands of visitors can enjoy our beach in the knowledge that it has retained the coveted blue flag award - meaning our beach is clean, safe and well managed for everyone to enjoy.

"With restrictions lifting from Monday 17 May, and staycations becoming more popular Hayling Island is a popular destination ideal for all visitors to our shoreline.  Central Beachlands already benefits from ‘excellent’ water quality, with zoned areas for swimmers, water sports enthusiasts and beach goers.  The blue flag also highlights the continuing high standards of facilities this area provides.

“It is testament to the hard work carried out by beach managers throughout the year in order to provide excellent facilities for everyone to enjoy, whether you live on the island or are a visitor."

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, we are going to be relying on our country’s beautiful beaches to escape for a much-needed break after all the stresses and strains of the past year.

“From environmental education for the local community and ensuring responsible beach use, to cleaning regimes and an increasing number of recycling facilities, it is a full-time commitment to create beaches worthy of these awards.

“As we all plan our 2021 holidays much closer to home, thanks to the Blue Flag Award those choosing to holiday at a destination with an award-winning beach can be assured it will be clean and safe and meet the highest standards for water quality and management.”

Central Beachlands is at the centre of Hayling seafront set between the funfair to the east and Inn on the Beach to the west.
