Tastes of the Mediterranean
Tastes of the Mediterranean take centre stage in Alton this Sunday (22nd November), with the town’s Market Square set to be transformed into an Italian Piazza.
Food stalls from ‘Italia in Piazza’ will be selling produce straight from Italy such as speciality meats, cheeses and herbs, along with traditional Italian favourites such as pasta, olives, oils, Balsamic vinegars and breads.
With Christmas just around the corner, the market also offers an ideal opportunity to pick up traditional Italian Pantone, Biscotti and Torrone cake to add that extra special touch to your tables during the festive season.
Simon Faro, from Italia in Piazza, said: “So many things can be associated with Italy such as fast cars, sunshine and football, but undoubtedly the biggest thing is food. Italy's passion and love for food is second to none. Discussions about to how to cook pasta sauces and what goes with what start on the school playground and becomes part of the culture as you grow up.
“Italia in piazza shares this passion and love for food. We bring you real Italian food, made in Italy, right to your neighbourhoods throughout England. And when we say made in Italy we mean real Italian foods served by real Italians! The only market of its kind in the country.”
The Alton Twinning Association will also be in the Market Square with information about Alton’s Italian twin town, Montecchio Maggiore, a small town in northern Italy, which has been twinned with Alton since 1998.
Don Hammond, Chair of Alton Town Twinning Association (ATTA), commented: "It will be wonderful to have the colours and tastes of an Italian market in the town. It is particularly appropriate because of our long relationship with Montecchio and it will be a great reminder of the regular weekly market that we have enjoyed there during our visits."
