Determined to make a difference
Henry Ascoli, communications manager at The Directory Group, explains the inspiration behind his upcoming charity challenge and how to get involved…
Almost every day, we hear of charity challenge or achievement, a fundraiser determined to make a difference.
More often than not, it’s not the challenge itself which attracts attention, but the inspiration behind it – the reason why the individual, team or business steps forward to raise funds.
For me personally, I wanted to support causes with a personal connection – Diabetes UK and Mind – and rather than signing up for an existing charity challenge, set up my own event: a ‘spinathon’.
I will be cycling for 12 hours non-stop on a spin bike at Petersfield’s Positive Lifestyle Health Club on Sunday 17 January (8am-8pm). The event will be split into 12 sessions of 45-50 minutes, so anyone who wishes to take part can book for as many sessions as they wish, with no charge – only donations.
Fitness and health have always been important to me, and shaped every aspect of my life. This was the motivation and theme for my challenge. Those affected by diabetes and mental health issues ultimately live their life around their condition - every day presents a challenge in one way or another.
Diabetes UK is the leading charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of every person affected by or at risk of diabetes.
The charity provides information, help and peer support, so people with diabetes can manage their condition effectively. It is one of the largest funders of diabetes research in the UK.
Mind aims to achieve better mental health, providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. The charity campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of mental health.
Both charities carry out vital work across the UK every day, but I believe that improving awareness and understanding is just as important – if not more so – than raising money.
Throughout training for the spinathon, I will be posting photos and updates across social media to raise awareness of the charities, along with information about what they do and how to get in touch. On the day, further details and leaflets about both causes will be available to pick up at Positive Lifestyle Health Club.
