A childhood dream is soon to become a reality for Katie Bryant, an inspired young fundraiser from Alton.
Amery Hill School pupil Katie, 15, suffers from Hodgkin's Lymphoma (cancer of the blood), for which she has had surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Nevertheless, she has been at the forefront of a determined effort to raise funds for the Piam Brown unit of Southampton Hospital, an oncology and haematology centre caring for children from birth to 16 years, and the CLIC Sargent cancer charity for children and young people.
Katie’s parents have organised several events to support the two causes, while also raising money to pay for Katie to go to New York in January.
To help her enjoy her trip, Alton Lions have donated $100 spending money, which was recently presented to her family by Alton Lions President Peter Bacon.
Katie’s mum, Helen, explained: “My husband decided he wanted to fundraiser as Katie’s dream has always been to go to New York.
“We also wanted to do something for the ward so he decided to do a 12-hour dart marathon. He thought it would be him and a couple of mates but in the end we had 24 people taking part. We raised enough money for Katie's dream holiday and also raised a lot of money for the ward.
“We also had a huge raffle, where many local companies donated wonderful prizes, and we held an auction for the larger prizes, and my parents held a cheese and wine party to raise money for the ward.”
The Alton branch of Santander stepped in to show its support, hosting charity treatments from local beauticians and hairdressers, a cake sale and raffle, and matching the £1,200 raised, while The Mulberry in Farnham hosted a soul night.
More recently, ITV’s Text Santa appeal paid a visit to film and interview Katie as part of their Christmas Jumper Day coverage.
Helen added: “Everyone worked so hard to make the events happen – the amount of support we’ve had has been truly overwhelming.”
