How many of us make fitness resolutions for the New Year, only to give them up by February?

Local personal trainer Julia Willmott and Mark Paris, managing director at Petersfield-based Fit Hire, share their top tips on time-efficient and effective training in 2016...

“The optimum time to exercise is when you feel most like doing it,” Mark explains. “The logic is simple – if you’re in the mood to work out, then you are most likely to stick to it and push yourself harder.

“If training time is at a premium, it is wise to select an activity which engages every major muscle group, as well as offering an excellent cardio workout. “

It’s also important to set yourself targets, providing the motivation to succeed.

“Make your resolution specific and measurable,” Julia advises. “For example: ‘I want to be able to cycle to work and back four times a week’ gives yourself a tangible goal which you are more likely to stick to. So many people fall into the trap of setting themselves impossible targets, such as losing two stone in two months.”

However, in the mad rush to diet and detox in the New Year, it’s all too easy to neglect our bodies – good nutrition is vital, no matter what your health and fitness goals.

Mark: “Re-fuelling is critical. Post-workout snacks should be protein and carbohydrate-rich and should not exceed 150 calories. Meal portions should be kept to a sensible size.

“Also, remember to track your workouts accurately to make sure you are really burning the amount of calories that you think. Heart rate monitors or mobile phone apps can be used for this.”

Julia: “The only way to really stick to a fitness resolution is to choose an activity which you'll enjoy. 

“If you fall off the wagon, treat it as a setback not a failure, and set little rewards for yourself – you've earnt it!”
