Leading the way
Havant is leading the way in embracing the fitness phenomenon taking the country by storm.
‘Parkrun’ is a volunteer-led running initiative featuring free weekly 5Km events for runners of all ages and abilities, and Havant was the first town in the Portsmouth area to organise its own Parkrun at Staunton Country Park near Leigh Park.
The Havant event, organised by Waterlooville resident and software engineer Dave Williams, typically attracts around 200-250 runners per week from children to pensioners, and recently welcomed Havant MP Alan Mak.
Parkrun’s success is based on its social nature, with runners keen to build a community based on their shared interest - not just racing each other. Many runners build new friendships through staying for post-run coffee and cakes at Parkrun ‘Cake Club’ held at the cafe in Staunton Country Park.
Dave said: “Havant parkrun is going from strength to strength, and a popular way for residents to get fit and have fun every week. It's a real community event, and we’re delighted Alan has completed the 5K run and experienced it for himself.”
