Sporting success

Talented sportspeople from across the local area celebrated success at the East Hampshire Sports Awards, hosted by Old Thorns Manor Hotel in Liphook.

The awards, organised by East Hampshire District Council, recognise sporting achievements and the commitment of the people who make success possible, such as coaches and officials.

Guest speaker at the event was Roger Black MBE, one of Britain’s most successful athletes, who spoke about his sporting career.

Leader of EHDC, Councillor Ferris Cowper, was also on hand to launch the council’s new Elite Sports Fund. From September 2016, the fund will provide grants for promising athletes of between £50 and £600 towards coaching, qualifications, clothing, equipment or travel.

The evening was once again presented by Fred Dinenage MBE, ITV Meridian Tonight stalwart and long-time supporter of the event.

Winners included former Petersfield Town Juniors player Calum Chambers, fresh from scoring a curling shot from the edge of the area against Burnley for his current club Arsenal, who was named as joint-winner of the Sportsman of the Year category with talented cricketer Brad Taylor.

The winners of the East Hampshire Sports Awards will now be entered for the Hampshire Sports Awards, which take place this month.
