Something different

A talented pupil from Cowplain Community School enjoyed the opportunity to make a Royal connection.

Year 10 student Maddy Crews was invited to meet HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, at the diamond anniversary celebrations for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (D of E).

Maddy , Year 10, who is working towards her D of E Award through the Havant Open Centre and is also part of the Youth Forum, was invited to attend an event at Peter Symonds College in Winchester to mark the 60th anniversary of the award, which was founded by Prince Philip.

Maddy is currently working on her skills section of the award and was tasked with running an interactive session for HRH Prince Edward. She opted for cake decorating; baking five fruit cakes and covering them in white fondant icing, edged with burgundy ribbon, ready for the event.

Alongside studying for her GCSEs, Maddy also runs a small cake business, Maddy’s Cakes, making and decorating cakes to order.

Maddy said: “It was a lovely opportunity to meet His Royal Highness Prince Edward, he was very kind and genuine.

“It was interesting to hear him talk about the D of E logo - I thought that the symbol was made up of two swords, but he said it was two Ps, back to back. I enjoy working towards my D of E Award, as I’m increasing in confidence and learning new skills which can be used on college and job applications. Today was a great opportunity to do something different.”
