A living legacy
Join in the celebrations for one of England’s most influential writers during Jane Austen Regency Week.
Taking place between Saturday 18th and Sunday 26th June, the festival aims to mark the iconic author’s legacy, with a wealth of events taking place in Alton and Chawton. Here are just some of the highlights…
Saturday 18th June, 10am-3pm: Alton Regency Day, High Street, Alton (Free entry).
Entertainment in the High Street, including may pole and country dancing, a swordsmanship display, folk music, petting animals and market stalls, plus people in Regency costumes.
Saturday 18th June, 7.30pm for 8pm start: Regency Ball, Alton Assembly Rooms,
High Street, Alton (entry £45).
If you like dancing, this is your chance to have fun dancing in Regency style, led by Hampshire Regency Dancers, with live music by Hampshire Regency Players, will be on hand to demonstrate and lead the dances. Dress either in Regency Costume or smart Evening Wear.
Sunday 19th June, 11am: ‘Jane Austen’s Chawton’ – a guided walk with Jane Hurst, starting on Alton side of the A31 underpass, at the end of the Old Winchester Road. (£5)
Whilst many people visit Chawton to see Jane Austen’s House Museum and Chawton House Library, there are many more buildings and former residents of Chawton connected with Jane Austen and her family.
The walk will take approx. 1½ hours ending back where the walk started or stopping off at the vintage fair on the way back.
Friday 24th June, 7pm for 7.30pm: Regency evening concert, directed by Barbara Tansey at Alton House Hotel. (£10)
Enjoy an elegant and entertaining evening of music and drama from Jane Austen’s era - details to follow.
Sunday 26th June, 10am-6pm: Victorian cricket, The Butts Green (south end of Alton). Free entry.
For the 33rd year, this long-standing community event offers a relaxing and enjoyable day of activities. The cricket teams wear period costumes and battle it out for a prize of 500 guineas (£525). Spectators can also enjoy the many and varied stalls and activities, and partake of the food and drink.
Sunday 26th June, 7pm for 7.30pm: Regency Supper, Alton House Hotel. (£25)
Experience a Regency-style meal where all the dishes (including the desserts) are put on the table at the same time for guests to serve themselves. Guests encouraged to dress in Regency Costume or smart attire. This event marks the end of the 2016 Regency Week.
