A proud moment

A former soldier from Denmead  received a hero’s welcome on his return after clinching gold at this year’s Invictus Games.

Andy McErlean came out on top in the wheelchair doubles tennis. Together with teammate Alex Krol, Andy won the finals 6-1 against New Zealand, and was presented his gold medal by Prince Harry.

On a visit to his local Sainsbury’s in Waterlooville, Andy received a rousing reception and something of a rare treat for an athlete: triple-layered chocolate cake!

This year was the second time Andy has competed in the games after becoming paralysed from a car crash. Then 19 and just a year after joining the army, he was seriously injured when the car overturned.

But his determination and passion for sport prevailed and he went on to win a gold medal in the 2014 Invictus Games in the basketball final against America.

Reflecting on his latest victory, Andy said: “It was a proud moment. To get the gold medal presented by Prince Harry was remarkable.”
