What will you discover...?
From 8th-11th September, thousands of volunteers across the country invite you to experience local history, architecture and culture with Heritage Open Days… all for free. What will you discover?
Here are some of our highlights across the Alton and Alresford area…
There’s an opportunity to experience the award-winning Aldridge Theatre at Frensham Heights School near Farnham on Thursday 8th September (6pm) and Friday 9th September (5pm).
The Aldridge Theatre, situated in the grounds of the school and designed by architects Burrell Foley Fischer LLP in 2000, is purpose built for teaching and public performance and has won several awards including the Royal Fine Art Commission/Sky TV Building of the Year Award in the Education category.
The tour lasts about two hours, and pre-booking is required. Email email@example.com
Experience the stunning natural amphitheatre that is the Matterley Bowl near Alresford with a guided tour on Thursday 8th September (between 9am and 3pm).
Originally of glacial formation, it was once the setting for General Dwight Eisenhower to address members of the American invasion force shortly before the D Day launch in June 1944. Also there at that time was heavyweight boxing champion of the world Joe Louis, giving his fellow GIs a boxing exhibition.
The bowl has more recently been the backdrop to several music festivals but on this Heritage Day you will be able to see (and try for yourself) examples of traditional land management skills such as hedge laying and hurdle making.
There is no booking required for this event, and the postcode is SO21 1HW.
Explore the history of watercress in Hampshire with a guided walk around the beds and learn more about the health-giving properties of watercress and wasabi at The Watercress Co on Friday 9th September (6pm-8pm).
This will be followed by a tour of the onsite Winchester Distillery, with a free tasting of their award-winning watercress gin.
This event is not suitable for children under the age of 18, and there is no booking required. The postcode is SO24 9DH.
