Getting into the festive spirit
From beautiful markets to winter wonderland, events and activities across the local area to get into the festive spirit…
This year, Winchester Cathedral’s incredibly popular Christmas Market celebrates its 10th anniversary.
The event runs from Friday 18th November to Tuesday 20th December, open every day, 10am-6pm from Sunday to Wednesday, and 10am-7.30pm from Thursday to Saturday.
Now recognised as being one of the best in Europe due to its perfect location, high-quality goods and bustling friendly atmosphere, this is a market not be missed.
All exhibitors are handpicked due to the high quality, original goods they provide. And of course, the traditions continue when it comes to food and drink, with mulled wine, bratwurst and mince pies among the offerings.
Furthermore, the Cathedral’s ever-popular ice rink is set to feature a clear-span roof for the first time, open from Friday 18th November 2016 to Monday 2nd January 2017.
And there’s another chance to get into the festive spirit by watching the switch on of the wonderful Winchester Christmas lights on Thursday 17th November (4pm-8pm), with food, drink and entertainment for all the family. Look out for guest appearances from the cast of this year's Theatre Royal Winchester pantomime, ‘Cinderella’.
In Alton itself, the Town Mayor (and his special guest from the North Pole) will be on hand to switch on the Christmas lights on Friday 25th November, from 5.45pm in the Market Square.
Alton’s well-known annual Yuletide Festival returns again on Sunday 4th December (10am-4pm) with stalls lining the High Street, Assembly Rooms and the ACA Christmas Cracker in the Community Centre.
Alternatively, enjoy a magical and literary evening this Christmas in the beautiful setting of Chawton House Library on Saturday 3rd December, with large open fires and oak-panelled rooms full of Christmas cheer.
The evening will include wine and canapes, dinner inspired by 18th century cuisine, a silent auction, a raffle and tours of the house and library.
Throughout December, Birdworld near Farnham will become a Winter Wonderland - a magical world full of animated characters and various winter scenes. Meet the elves before they take you to Santa, who will give you a present himself!
