Gardening tips: April
April is the time to continue with the spring-cleaning of your garden in preparation for summer.
Be organised and take care of your equipment! Make sure your lawn mower has been serviced, your tools cleaned and repaired and check garden furniture for any decay. When it is warm enough, it is also a good idea to treat fences, sheds and trellis with a wood preservative.
Keep things neat and tidy! Mow grass fortnightly. Neaten up your paths, terraces and drives by removing moss and getting rid of weeds before they take hold. You can use a general weed killer.
Now is the perfect time to start growing some new vegetables – begin to sow the seeds for peas, broad beans and root veg. Also pot marigold – flowers will have grown within 10 weeks and you can eat their petals in your salads!
If slugs and snails are proving to be an issue with new growth, use flat stones around your garden to gain the helping hand out of birds in their catching techniques.
Remember, it’s not summer yet. Keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. If planting tender bedding, be sure to be able to cover it if needed.
