Seven homemade rafts took to the water on Saturday 8 July

Seven homemade rafts took to the water on Saturday 8 July in the Ship Inn Raft Race to raise funds for the Hayling Island RNLI Station

This annual race, organised jointly by the Ship Inn and the Hayling RNLI was once again closely contested both on the water and in designing and building the best raft.

This year two rafts were outstanding, ‘Blues Brothers’ made by Horndean Old Age Firefighters complete with flashing car, and ‘Builders of the Caribbean’ made by local builders who were the eventual ‘best raft’ winners.

First home once again were Hayling Classic cars in ‘Stealth craft,’ closed chased by Black Sheep Divers a team from the Black Sheep pub.  The Blues brothers were 3rd whilst the Ship Inn entry ‘Thunderbirds’ with a crew of 4 limped round the course but managed to finish, met by a gang of Blues Brothers waiting to sabotage their raft!!

Ship Inn Manager Mark Dawson said ‘This is a great event and we all had fun on a fine sunny day. Thanks to the RNLI crew who organised the actual race and its safety, I’m looking forward to next year and to the sponsorship rolling in.’
