An Exotic Journey - Mela Restaurant Review

Mela restaurant have been taking customers on an exotic journey through the rich food heritage of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan for the past 12 years…

Located on Drift Road in Clanfield, Mela Restaurant has been refurbished into a delightful haven which welcomes you the moment you step through the door. The décor is stunning – candle lit with lanterns adorning the walls, with a large, beautiful hand painted mural. The restaurant was busy despite it being a Monday night, which impressed us from the get-go… there’s nothing worse than sitting down to eat in an empty restaurant!

The staff welcomed us in a warm and friendly manner, before taking us to our table. The first thing that occurred to us upon glancing at the menu was how different the choices were to other Indian restaurants, and how affordable the dishes were (starters from £3.50, mains from £6.90). The classics were all there, however there were a delightful array of new dishes which seemed slightly lighter and more delicate. We were interested in trying one of these dishes, so for starters chose the Niru Special (£5.90) with the Pan-Fried Salmon (£4.90).

The Pan-Fried Salmon was delicious… perfectly fried in a fresh infusion of garlic, herbs and Dijon mustard - a light and elegant dish. The Niru Special featured a selection of Kombi Mushroom, Chicken Tikka, Onion Bhaji and Lamb Finger, all cooked to perfection and complimenting each other in a delightful way.

For our main courses, we chose the Nawab Special (£11.90) - which was a new addition to the menu – and the Pepper Chicken (£10.90). The Nawab Special was a striking dish, with gorgeous flavours of both lamb and chicken. The Pepper Chicken was exquisite - succulent strips of spiced chicken cooked with black pepper, ginger and garlic in a medium peppery sauce.

What was really refreshing about the Mela restaurant was how contemporary the menu was… the chefs have obviously put a huge amount of effort into ensuring they are providing their clients with something different.

If you’re interested in dining on a budget, the Mela restaurants’ takeaway menu could be perfect for you. Offering immense discounts (Nawab Special £7.90 to takeaway, £11.90 in restaurant) on most dishes served in the restaurant, this will definitely become our favourite place to order this winter!
