The Allen Gallery

The Allen Gallery is an intimate setting which houses one of the South’s most outstanding ceramics collections of English, continental and oriental pottery, porcelain and tiles from 1250 to the present day. The gallery also hosts regular special exhibitions of art, crafts, photography, local and natural history, and the delightful watercolours and oil paintings of W H Allen. There is a comfortable coffee lounge, and a charming walled garden which all in all makes the Allen Gallery a peaceful retreat in the middle of Alton.

Ceramics…

The Allen Gallery has several major collections, which have been acquired over the course of the 20th century, either given by collectors or bought by the County. Today the aim is to provide a comprehensive display of ceramics to interest visitors of all kinds. Over 3,000 items are on show; primarily pieces from the UK, though also some of the eastern Asian and continental wares which historically have influenced the ceramics industry in this country. The items on show are interesting to see, no matter where your interests lie!

W H Allen…

W H Allen was a working artist whose career spanned more than 50 years, from the late 1880’s to the early 1940’s. During that time, he painted many thousands of pictures, mainly in watercolour, of the countryside around Farnham and the north Hampshire borders but also in the counties bordering the south coast of England and on the Continent. He acts as the namesake of the Allen Gallery, and therefore the gallery hosts a permanent collection of his truly beautiful work.

The garden…

The garden at the Allen Gallery is a mixture of herbaceous and shrub borders as well as raised beds, and has been planned so that there should be something of interest at all times of the year. The Allen Gallery gardeners are volunteers who come in about once a week and try to keep the area tidy and welcoming for the benefit of our visitors and the local community.  The garden does not set out to be a botanic garden, but more a place where visitors can relax and perhaps gain ideas for their own gardens as well!
