The adaptation of the Beauty and the Beast theatre show was a huge success at Portsmouth’s New Theatre Royal last week.
Hundreds of people were entertained as they viewed the vibrant new version of the popular spectacle.
The Christmas production, which was entertaining for both youngsters and adults, was adapted to a Portsmouth audience.
With references to the Historical Dockyard, Royal Navy and Emirates Spinnaker Tower, the original storyline of the production was intertwined well with local context.
Humour was also added through references regarding the Portsmouth and Southampton division.
“We’ve been working through the year to bring you one of the biggest, brightest and most magical Christmas productions on the south coast” writes the theatres chief executive, Scott Ramsay.
Beauty and the Beast has long been a popular folk tale, appearing through time, and this contemporary approach was well received.
The show was delivered by professional performers and performers of the Giselle School of Performing Arts
Kirsty-Anne Shaw, who played Beauty, was quintessential for the role.
She has strong vocals and interacted with the audience effectively.
Timothy Lucas, who portrayed baddie Frederic, was excellent in his role as a slimy and malicious character.
The frustration of the audience would build as his character developed throughout the performance.
Additionally, the actor was humorous during the ‘scene change song’ offering variety to the show and truly expressing his talent.
Drawing our attention to the younger members of the cast it is apparent Callum Bowman delivers skill to the company.
His dancing, singing and shorter spoken pieces were impressive.
At times his character was lost within some dialogue, through the busyness of movement on the platform, but what he did showcase was strong. It would be encouraging to see this local lad in more performances on theatre stages across the area.
Overall, congratulations to the whole team for a performance which did not only entertain children, but was an enjoyable experience for adults too.
Beauty and the Beast will be at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth until 31st December. For more information and tickets see: www.newtheatreroyal.com
