Five tips for hiring new members of staff

Published on 1st Feb 18

As a Hampshire based business we understand how exciting it can be to be in a position of expanding your team.

When people from across the area consistently use local companies, you witness a steady and encouraging amount of growth.

Often, these profits may be used for the creation of more jobs, ultimately having additional staff to increase revenue, working in harmony with the local economy.

Business Buddies supports you with finding the right person to hire and who can be a part of developing the journey your company is on.

1. Define and document the job

Ensure you understand the role you intend to advertise. It may sound obvious, but it is important for you to be clear on what you are looking for to support the business. Ask yourself:

  • Who will manage the appointed individual?
  • What are the KPIs by which they will be measured?
  • What training will you provide them?
  • Do you have a clear job description?
  • How long is the contract and what are you prepared to pay?
  • How many hours will they work and how will they communicate with your team?

2. Have an ideal candidate in mind

This can be a challenge – especially if it is a newly created position. However, take time to think about the characteristics and experience needed to execute the job description. Does the role require a degree, more experience or any other specialist training?

3. Know where to look

There are hundreds of recruitment websites so ensure you do your research! Often you may find it more practical advertising a position through a website which specialises in recruitment for your industry. Look around.

4. Set clear expectations and defined measurables

Clearly defining expectations and milestones can be a challenging step when hiring a member of staff. If the appointed person is not hitting milestones, you can point back to the agreement as leverage for improving.

5. Don’t shy away from a recruitment test

A test project will not only show you the skill of an individual – but it will give you an idea of how the relationship would work. It is not uncommon for businesses to test potential applicants so embrace this as and where appropriate.
