RNLI Lifeboat Volunteer Peter says it’s a great crew to be with
Peter Walmsley has been a member of the Hayling Lifeboat Crew for the past 17 years and he would recommend it to anyone looking to join a friendly team and feel what you are doing is worthwhile.
Peter was brought up in N Lancashire miles from the sea and it was only when he joined IBM that he decided Hayling Island and its seaside would be a good place to live. He was however kept busy with work, getting married and bringing up a family, until in 2000 he started working from home and had time to think about volunteering. He knew that the Hayling Lifeboats were looking for crew so he made contact and started life as a member of the shore crew team.
He joined in his words ‘A nice bunch of guys and found them easy to fit in with.’ He was taken through training and then, when Operations Manager was looking for a Deputy Launch Authorities (DLA). Volunteer, Peter offered to train and become a DLA. Peter said ‘When you bring in casualties and know they might not have survived you know you’ve made a difference to their lives.’ He also reflected on the first time he witnessed hypothermia to realise, when the casualty collapsed, that he was beyond shivering!
Feel inspired? Then come and join Peter and some 40 others in saving lives, as we are currently recruiting for new crew members. Come down any Wednesday evening after 7pm or Sunday morning 10-12 noon or call Alan on 07749 061220.
