Local community buy all items on wish list for QA children's ward
Staff from the Children’s Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital have expressed their gratitude to members of the surrounding community who have bought items on a wish list in just a few days.
An Amazon wish list, which consisted of more than 200 items of toys, clothes, arts and crafts and books were purchased sooner than anticipated.
The department serves the region, inclusive of the Cowplain area, and the new items will make a huge difference.
Claire Roberts, Sister on the Starfish Ward who organised and managed the list, says people are positive and thankful with the result.
She said: “I was told about wish lists by a nurse friend whose ward had already set one up. I thought it was a really simple idea and could see how our children’s wards could benefit from it.
“Many of our parents ask us what they can give to say thank you, and it’s often difficult to think of things on the spot, and to be sensitive of price. With the wish list, families and friends could go to Amazon and choose something that they would like to buy us.
“We have been bought items from baby socks to phone chargers, hot chocolate for the parents and board games. Personally, I have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown, and this is going to have a massive positive impact on our unit.”
The items will now be distributed to the children being looked after there.
Portsmouth Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a Level 3 Unit, providing the area with Neonatal Intensive Care and support for the babies and their families, during an often unexpected and stressful journey through NICU.
Items listed have been suggested to assist with baby’s development and care, encourage home comforts for siblings and family members and help create a welcoming and warm environment for all visitors to the Unit as well as creature comforts for the Doctors, Nurses and teams of staff that help to keep the Unit operating smoothly.
