Hayling Scout is working hard towards adventure of lifetime
A teenager is working hard so he can embark on an adventure of his lifetime with the Scout Association next year.
Luke Bailey, 14, from Shark Troop at 3rd Hayling Scouts, has been selected among many other Hampshire Scouts to be a part of PROJECT 19, where he will participate in a road trip across the west coast of America traveling from New York to Florida.
The trip will include Atlanta, Tennessee and various other states, while also a visit to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia.
The event, in August 2019, means Luke, along with 7 other scouts selected from Hayling Island, must raise at least £2,800 each to be able to attend.
Three leaders from Hayling Island will be attending also – collectively making the cost around £30,000.
Many fun, challenging and adventurous scouting activities, such as cooking, sport and music and sightseeing will be on the road trip.
Luke said: “I am incredibly excited about this opportunity and cannot wait to learn new skills and explore different cultures with Scouts.
“I am truly honoured to be selected to attend this adventure and am working really hard raising money to make this trip happen.”
The enthusiastic Explorer Scout has been working on many different projects to raise awareness on his trip and fundraise cash.
Recently, he has helped cut down large trees, painted an engine room of a boat, sold sweets at fetes, packed bags at supermarkets and has had a local television interview to raise money.
“There will be 165 different nationalities at the jamboree. The fundraising has been challenging at times, but I have really enjoyed all the things I have done so far and look forward to working on more fundraisers” Luke said.
He added: “Working on the boat was really interesting. Everything I am doing will make it all worthwhile because I know I will have tried my hardest to earn it. I cannot wait.”
The event would not be possible if it wasn’t for the adult volunteers flying out with the young people next year.
Luke’s mum, Sarah, will be attending as a leader and also has to raise £2,800.
She said: “I am so proud of Luke. It is an amazing adventure.
“Luke has been working really hard to raise money for his trip and has come up with lots of fundraising ideas.”
