Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Isle of Wight Festival

With the 50th Anniversary of the Isle of Wight Festival 2018 officially over and out, we take a look back of this year’s festival highlights…

Crowds of campers began to arrive the morning of Thursday 21st June, as they set up their home for the weekend. Whether you like to rough it or take the luxury route, the IOW festival offers an array of accommodation needs to suit any visitor; including standard camping, family camping, respect camping, campervan site, Kip’n’Go tents and Love Your Tent camping.

On Friday 22nd, thousands of music fans piled into the festival site to watch their favourite acts, including footballer, Peter Crouch, who booted multiple signed footballs into the crowd #footballscominghome.

Friday saw the bluesy ballads of Bang Bang Romeo, the catalogue of hits by Rita Ora and the conveyer belt of hip shaking number 1’s by Nile Rodgers & Chic. Chatting to Nile Rodgers himself, the Absolute Radio interview by Sarah Champion revealed just how close he and David Bowie became and that he does not know when he’s written a hit.

By the end of the day, Headliners Kasabian brought their stadium-filling spirit to the Newport site that was a full throttle hedonistic joyride.

Along with the sound of voices singing, festival goers were encouraged to explore the endless amenities of IOW festival, including the countless food stalls, a kids area and the 160ft bungee jump ran by Save The Children; this year’s charity partner.

The celebration of the festivals ‘Golden Jubilee’ officially began on Saturday with thousands of attendees adorning themselves in gold. The festival saw a crowd of sparkling divas, shining stars and victorious gladiators as participants gathered at the Helter Skelter at 2pm to watch the announcement of the best dressed winners.

The crowds roared as Saturday saw headliners Depeche Mode and Liam Gallagher take to the stage alongside James Bay, Blossoms and Kodaline. Once acts had taken their final bow, after hours began, including DJ sets in the Strongbow Yard and Electro Love tent and an extremely popular Silent Disco! Thousands gathered to The Field of Dreams to watch England thrash Panama on Sunday whilst also enjoying performances from Van Morrison, Camila Cabello and Manic Street Preachers.

The Killers were this years closing act, with a crowd gathering back as far as one can see. As the base of the guitars from the final song, ‘Mr Bright Side’ vibrated through the ground, festival goers were treated with a magnificent firework display to really ensure this years 50th IOW festival went out with a bang!
