MP Alan Mak backs Havant Thicket reservoir plans

Local MP Alan Mak has backed plans by Portsmouth Water to build a new reservoir at Havant Thicket following a meeting with Managing Director Neville Smith.

The proposed Havant Thicket Reservoir (set to be built by 2029) will provide 23 million litres of water per day. This will help reduce water capacity pressure in the surrounding region by storing excess winter rainfall from Havant springs that would normally drain into the sea.

The reservoir will include a visitor centre, paths, cycle ways, play areas, plus a wetland area for birds.

After the meeting Alan said: “I welcome Portsmouth Water’s significant infrastructure investment to ensure that our area’s water needs are secured for the future. Not only will it help to drought-proof our region, but the plans for recreational and leisure facilities have the potential to be improve the local environment so its enjoyed by both current and future generations.”

Portsmouth Water's managing director Neville Smith said: "In responding to our consultation, our customers have told us very clearly that they support our plans to build the reservoir.  We want it to be not just a long term solution to future water needs, but a place where people can enjoy a beautiful water environment.”
