In honour of those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts past and present, uniformed and public services students paraded through Havant & South Downs College where staff and pupils paid their respects ahead of Remembrance Day – before laying wreaths at the memorial of a fellow student who lost his life.

Royal Marine Richard Hollington, a former public services student from the college, became the 300th British serviceman to die during the conflict in Afghanistan in 2010 aged 23. Principal and chief executive at HSDC, Mike Gaston, said: ‘It’s always a very moving and poignant ceremony where students and staff from across the college come together to remember those who served selflessly.

College director Lee Hunt presented the Richard Hollington Award to volunteer staff member Chris Cooper. The award is given annually to staff or students who by their efforts have shown care and understanding for others. Mr Hunt said: ‘Chris is a very quiet yet selfless young man, who has given up so much of his free time for the sports department, specifically the Football Academy.

‘Chris has been volunteering with us for six years and has been a part of many successes for the college in that time’ The parade ended with children from Little Faces Nursery placing crosses at Richard Hollington’s memorial before Cadet Sargent Major Ivan Austin brought the parade to attention and dismissed the students.

He said: ‘The parade went really well. It was because of everyone’s commitment and hard work from staff and students that it came together so well.’
