RNLI comes to aid of small yacht with engine trouble
A small yacht returning to home port lost engine power and drifted out of the harbour and the skipper couldn’t restart the engine which worried his wife.
Motoring into Chichester Harbour against an ebb tide a Westerly Nomad yachts’ engine failed. The skipper spent about an hour trying to start the engine while the yacht drifted out of the harbour. When it reached the West Pole Beacon the skipper’s wife contacted the coastguard who asked for lifeboat assistance. The Atlantic 85 was launched and soon reached the casualty. Once the lifeboat was alongside, a tow
was established and as the lady was very nervous and stressed it was decided to tow the boat back to Itchenor close to where they had left their car. This achieved, the lifeboat then returned to the Station.
This rescue is the 49th launch this year and is the 15th since the 1 July. It has involved a number of boats with engine trouble but also worryingly a number of rescues involving casualties at risk of drowning. We all need
to respect the sea and make sure we are prepared and aware of its dangers.
