Businesses and Residents Pulling Together for Local Nature Reserve

Businesses and Residents Pulling Together for Local Nature Reserve

On 18th October 2019, Bordon businesses and residents will come together to help conserve Deadwater Valley Nature Reserve.

Community First and SiGNAL Bordon are organising the morning of volunteer conservation work to help Deadwater Valley Trust maintain the area as a wildlife habitat and leisure site. Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, will open the event in recognition of the time and effort given by the community.

Volunteers will join Rangers from the Deadwater Valley Trust in tackling growths of rhododendron and bamboo, which can harm other plants and adversely affect the ecosystem in the area. This large task is essential for protecting wildlife habitats and keeping the nature reserve as a pleasant place for local people to spend time in nature. It will be a great chance for local nature lovers to learn more about woodland ecology and ways to care for the natural environment. The group will meet near the nature reserve at 9:45am and finish at 1:00pm. No previous conservation experience is necessary, as the Rangers from Deadwater Valley Trust will guide the group. All tools and equipment will be provided.

Spending time in the fresh air and meeting new people is a sure way to raise spirits while bringing the community together. It will also provide ample networking opportunities for volunteers from businesses. Most importantly, all hands on deck will get the job done. As Janet Duggan from Community First recalls, “You don’t need to be a regular volunteer to have a positive impact. We have had several successful Social Action Days now, including helping Wickham Community Centre build a community garden during the nationwide Volunteers Week last year. We are looking forward to another chance to show that we can make a big difference in only one morning.”

Anyone who is interested in attending can register online at https://easthantsvolweek19.eventbrite.com and will find out further information for the day via email.

Community First arranges employee volunteering schemes and connects individuals to volunteering opportunities across Hampshire. If you would like to find out more about the team volunteering day or other ways to get involved in the community, please contact Janet Duggan at janet.duggan@cfirst.org.uk.
