Dick Whittington cast go shopping at The Brooks

This week several colourful characters from this year’s Theatre Royal Winchester panto, Dick Whittington, took a break from winning hearts – or meddling, in the case of King Rat – to pay a visit to The Brooks Shopping Centre.

Ed Thorpe’s Dick Whittington; Dame Dolly Dumpling – played by panto regular Julian Eardley; King Rat or actor Kristopher Milnes; and this year’s love interest Alice Fitzwarren (Joanna Brown), dropped in to see what bargains could be had.

They pondered the latest fashion, with our Dame having to make some tough decisions over comical graphic t-shirts.

Meanwhile, in the toy shop, Dick took a fancy to a Frozen-themed baseball cap; before presenting his love, Alice, with a massive cuddly toy.

He also stopped the mischievous King Rat from making an escape, after the panto villain hid behind a huge stash of giant teddies.

Alice and the Dame posed for selfies; King Rat took a disliking to a number of cat puzzles; and the foolish, but ever loveable, Dick, managed to squeeze in a toy car – meant for children!

After much larking about they made it back to the theatre in one piece, ready for another day of entertaining the masses.

Kirstie Mathieson – Marketing and Communications Director for Play to the Crowd, the charity responsible for Theatre Royal Winchester, Hat Fair and Playmakers (youth work and community engagement) – said: “Our cast had a lovely trip to The Brooks Shopping Centre – which we thank for their continued partnership, and support of our annual pantomime.”

Dick Whittington tells the story of a man who seeks his fame and fortune in a London ravaged by the sinister King Rat and his rabble of Revolting Rodents.

The production continues to run from now until Sunday 5 January, with a relaxed performance – open to everyone but introduced for children and families with learning difficulties, special needs or Autistic Spectrum Condition, as well as people with dementia – on Thursday 2 January at 2.30pm.

Dick Whittington tickets are available online at theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk/whats-on/dick-whittington, by calling 01962 840440 or visiting the Box Office at the venue – Theatre Royal Winchester, Jewry Street, SO23 8SB
